IntroductionFIRST AND FOREMOSTThe concept of spiral wound gasket construction was originated by Flexitallic in 1912, inaugurating the beginning ofa new era in safe, effective sealing. The primary purposefor this development was the increasingly severe temperatures and pressures used by U.S. refinery operators in thefirst half of the century.Metal StripFiller MaterialThe necessity for a gasket to have the ability to recovercannot be over emphasized. The effects of pressure andtemperature fluctuations, the temperature differentialacross the flange face, together with bolt stress relaxationand creep, demand a gasket with adequate flexibility andrecovery to maintain a seal even under these varying service conditions. GASKET SELECTIONStyle CG - Utilizes an externalring which accurately centersgasket on flange face, providesadditional radial strength to prevent gasket blow-out and acts asa compression stop. A generalpurpose gasket suitable for usewith flat face and raised faceflanges up to and inclusive ofclass 2500. Above class 600 aninternal ring is recommended.What style of gasket should I select?Style CGI - A Style CG gasketfitted with internal ring whichgives an additional compressionlimiting stop and provides heatand corrosion barrier protectinggasket windings and preventingflange erosion. Suitable for usewith flat face and raised faceflanges and specified for highpressure/temperature service class 900 and above or wherecorrosive or toxic media are present.SELECTION GUIDEStyle R - Basic constructiontype. Inner and outer diametersare reinforced with several pliesof metal without filler to givegreater stability and better compression and sealing characteristics. SPECIAL GASKETSGaskets of special design can beengineered and fabricated usingthe same basic fundamentals ofFlexitallic Spiral Wound Gasketdesign and construction to cover awide range of applications ininstallations for which there are noindustry-wide standards.
